How to prepare your child for their first day at childcare
Starting childcare is an exciting milestone, but it can feel overwhelming for both children and parents. At Lili’s Early Learning Centre Hoppers Crossing, we’re here to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible. Here are some practical tips to help prepare your child for their first day:
Visit the centre together
Before their first day, arrange a tour to explore the centre, meet educators and spend time in their room. Familiarity with their new environment builds confidence and reduces anxiety, making drop-offs easier for both of you.
Talk positively about childcare
Discuss what your child will do each day, who they might meet and the fun activities they’ll enjoy. Using positive language creates happy expectations and helps your child feel excited rather than nervous.
Practise short separations
If your child hasn’t spent much time away from you before, start with short separations with trusted family or friends. This helps them build confidence in being cared for by others, easing their transition into childcare.
Establish a routine
Adjust your child’s sleep and meal times a week before care begins so they’re ready for their new daily rhythm. Predictable routines give children a sense of security, especially during times of change.
Pack comfort items
If allowed, send your child with a favourite teddy, blanket or dummy to help them settle if they feel anxious. Familiar items provide comfort and reassurance during the day.
Communicate with educators
Share important information about your child’s routines, likes, dislikes and any concerns you may have. Our educators are here to support your child and ensure their individual needs are met from day one.
At Lili’s Early Learning Centre Hoppers Crossing, our orientation process helps children settle gradually and build strong bonds with their educators. We keep you updated throughout the day, giving you peace of mind as your child begins their early learning journey.
