Is Your Child Ready for Kinder? A Simple Checklist for Hoppers Crossing Families

If you have a child turning four next year, kinder enrolment season can bring up a lot of questions — and one of the biggest is: “Are they actually ready?”

The good news is that in Victoria, kinder is designed to meet children where they are. There is no single “right” way to be ready for kindergarten. But there are some helpful signs to look out for — and a few things you can do at home to support your child’s confidence and independence before they start.

At Lili’s Early Learning Centre in Hoppers Crossing, our educators work with families across Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina, Werribee and the surrounding areas every day to help children make a smooth, happy transition into kinder. Here is our simple, practical checklist to guide you.

What does kinder readiness actually mean in Victoria?

In Victoria, the kindergarten program supports children aged three to five to learn through play, build social skills, and develop independence. The Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework guides what kinder looks like — and it is intentionally flexible, child-led, and inclusive. There is no checklist that every child must tick off before starting. Instead, kinder readiness is about where your child is right now, and what support they might benefit from before they begin.

The kinder readiness checklist: what to look for

Every child is different, and kinder readiness looks different for every family. Here are the key areas to reflect on as you think about your child’s readiness for kindergarten next year.

Social and emotional readiness

Social and emotional skills are at the heart of kinder readiness. Look for signs that your child is beginning to:

  • Separate from a parent or carer without extended distress

  • Play alongside or with other children

  • Show some awareness of other people’s feelings

  • Begin to take turns and share (even if it is still developing)

  • Manage big feelings with some support from an adult

Communication and language

Kinder involves a lot of talking, listening, and following simple instructions. Look for signs that your child can:

  • Speak in short sentences and be understood by familiar adults

  • Ask questions and show curiosity about the world

  • Follow two-step instructions

  • Use language to express needs, wants, and feelings

  • Enjoy stories, songs, and books

Self-care and independence

Kinder encourages children to develop independence in caring for themselves. Look for signs that your child can:

  • Dress and undress with some help

  • Use the toilet independently

  • Feed themselves at mealtimes

  • Wash and dry their hands

  • Pack and unpack a simple bag

Curiosity and a love of learning

Children who are naturally curious tend to settle well into kinder. Signs your child is ready to explore and engage include:

  • Show interest in books, stories, and pictures

  • Ask “why” and “how” questions

  • Engage in imaginative and creative play

  • Notice patterns, shapes, and things in their environment

  • Show willingness to try new activities and experiences

What if my child is not quite ready?

Not every child will tick every item on this list — and that is completely okay. In Victoria, kinder is designed to be flexible and meet children where they are. There is no set of skills your child must have before starting. If you have questions about whether your child is ready, speak with your early childhood educator or your kinder teacher. At Lili’s Early Learning Centre, we are always happy to talk through your concerns and help you and your family feel prepared and confident.
